Understanding Common Traffic Signs Used in Temporary Traffic Control Plans (TTCPs)

In any road construction or maintenance project, traffic signs are the backbone of safety. They provide clear guidance to motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists navigating temporary changes in the roadway. Whether it’s a simple lane closure or a complex detour, using the correct signs ensures compliance with MUTCD standards and helps prevent accidents.
Here’s a breakdown of some of the most commonly used traffic signs in TTCPs, especially those required by local and state jurisdictions like California (CA MUTCD).
Advance Warning Signs
W20-1: ROAD WORK AHEAD
This is the first sign drivers typically see approaching a construction zone. It alerts them to reduce speed and prepare for changes ahead.
W20-2: DETOUR AHEAD
Informs drivers that a detour is coming up. It’s used when the regular route is inaccessible and must be paired with directional signs to guide traffic.
W20-3: ROAD CLOSED AHEAD
Placed well before the closure point, this sign warns drivers to prepare for a full road closure. It helps minimize last-minute turns or U-turns.
W20-4: NARROW LANES
Indicates that one or more lanes will be narrower than standard. This is crucial for large vehicles and should be placed in advance of lane tapering.
W3-4: BE PREPARED TO STOP
Used when flaggers, signals, or sudden stops may occur ahead. It prepares drivers to reduce speed and stay alert.
Lane Closure & Merge Signs
C20(CA)(R): RIGHT (or LEFT) LANE CLOSED AHEAD
Used when the right or left lane is closed due to work. It’s a key part of lane tapering and must be supported by cones and channelizers.

W4-2(L) / W4-2(R): LANE ENDS MERGE LEFT / RIGHT
Informs drivers to merge due to the lane ending. This sign helps reduce abrupt lane changes and rear-end collisions in taper zones.
C30(CA): LANE CLOSED
This is a California-specific sign placed after intersections and every 150 feet along extended closures. It reminds drivers the lane remains closed.
C30a(CA): SHOULDER CLOSED
Warns that the shoulder is not available for emergency use or breakdowns. Important when equipment is staged near the travel way.
Closure and Restriction Signs
R11-2: ROAD CLOSED
Used at the point where access is restricted entirely. This is a hard closure sign—no through movement is allowed.
R11-4: ROAD CLOSED TO THROUGH TRAFFIC
Indicates local access only—residents, deliveries, and emergency services may pass, but through traffic must use an alternate route.
R3-1 / R3-2: NO RIGHT TURN / NO LEFT TURN
Restricts turning movements that may conflict with the construction zone. Often used in conjunction with detour routes.

Flagging Operations
C9A(CA): FLAGGER AHEAD
A mandatory sign when a flagger is directing traffic. It must be placed in advance to give drivers enough time to slow down.
Detour Signs
M4-10(L) / M4-10(R): DETOUR LEFT / DETOUR RIGHT
Directional detour signs that guide traffic away from closures and toward alternate routes. These must be accompanied by barricades or cones.

SC3(CA): DETOUR STRAIGHT
California-specific sign used when detour continues straight ahead. It helps clarify confusion at intersections or jogs in the route.
Regulatory Signs
R4-7a: KEEP RIGHT / R4-8a: KEEP LEFT
Used to guide traffic around medians, barricades, or channelizing devices. These are essential for maintaining flow and avoiding head-on conflicts.

Shared Roadway & Speed Advisory Signs
W11-1 / W16-1: SHARE THE ROAD (Bicycle Warning)
Alerts drivers that cyclists are present or allowed in the work zone area. Required when bike lanes are temporarily removed.
W12-1: HILL / DIVIDED TRAFFIC
Notifies drivers that traffic will split into two directions around a central obstruction. Often used in work zones where medians, barriers, or temporary islands are placed to guide vehicles safely.
Why These Signs Matter
Using the correct signs is not just about compliance — it’s about protecting lives. These signs:
- Reduce risk for drivers and workers
- Improve traffic flow through construction zones
- Prevent delays and accidents caused by confusion
- Ensure TTCP approval by city or agency reviewers
